How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Cat in the Bowl answers one question: will this trash can work in your kitchen, every day? It has to fit the spot, hold enough and open the way you like.

Here is how we get to an answer.

1. We start with size and space

Most kitchens use a 13 gallon can, but big families, small apartments and tight gaps all change that. We check the capacity in gallons and liters, plus the width, depth and height.

We also check how tall the can gets with the lid open. That matters under a counter overhang or a wall cabinet.

2. We check how it opens

Sensor cans open with a wave, pedal cans open with a step, and pull-out cans slide out of a cabinet. We look at the lid motion, soft-close features and how each can is powered.

For sensor cans, we note the battery type or power adapter each maker lists. For pull-outs, we note the cabinet opening each kit needs.

3. We compare build and features

We compare the body material, finish, inner bucket or liner rim, bag fit, odor filters, lid locks and recycling compartments. We also note the warranty terms each maker gives.

Makers describe their own products, so we name the brand for every claim. For example, we write "simplehuman says" rather than stating a promise as fact.

4. We read what owners report

We look for patterns in what owners say after months of use. Sticky pedals, lids that stop opening, bags that slip and dents in thin steel all count.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a can. A pattern does.

5. We score each can

Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what you're shopping for. A can that suits one kitchen may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

6. We keep pages current

Makers change models and sell close cousins under similar names. We check model numbers, sizes and finishes, link only new cans and skip any model with a known recall.

When a guide changes in a real way, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks come from research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every can we cover.

Odor filters and tight lids can help with smells, but no can stops every odor. Pull-out kits need careful fitting, so follow the maker's instructions.
